FAQs

Below you will find the answers to many frequently asked questions. Please contact us if you do not find the answer to your question.

Q: Do you have a brick-and-mortar store?

A: River City Soapworks does not operate out of a physical storefront. Rather, our business is conducted entirely online, which allows us the opportunity to reach a wider customer base and offer expanded hours beyond those of a traditional brick-and-mortar store. However, if you live in or near the St. Louis region, you can often find us at regional fairs, festivals, and farmer's markets. Be sure to check our our Blog for information about local events. You will also find our products in several local shops, salons, and boutiques within the St. Louis metropolitan area.  Click here to find a list of our retail partners.

Q: What are the benefits of handmade soap?

A: Saponification, or the making of soap, occurs through a chemical reaction between vegetable or animal fats, water, and sodium hydroxide (or lye).  Glycerin, a natural byproduct of this process, is a humectant that attracts and retains moisture on your skin like a natural skin lotion.  Commercial soaps are manufactured in large factories where glycerin is often removed from the soap and sold to manufacturers of high end cosmetics.

In a bar of handmade soap, the naturally occurring glycerin remains in the soap and provides natural moisturizing properties.  Handmade soap makers pride themselves on formulating recipes using the finest quality oils and butters, whereas commercial soap manufacturers generally use the most economical ingredients available. Commercial soaps usually also contain detergents and other surfactants that can dry and irritate your skin.

Q: What ingredients do you use in your soaps?

A: You can rest assured that River City Soapworks uses only the finest quality ingredients in all of our handmade soaps. Although individual recipes may vary by product, all of our soaps contain pure oils and butters including Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Avocado Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, Safflower Oil, Hemp Seed Oil, Castor Oil, Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, and Mango Butter. To achieve our soaps' colorful layers and swirl patterns, we use both natural plant-derived colorants as well as skin-safe cosmetic colorants. To achieve our amazing scents, we use both natural plant-derived essential oils and skin-safe cosmetic fragrance oils. The ingredient list for all our products are listed both on the product page as well as the product label.

Q: Are your soaps all-natural?

A: The term "all-natural" is wildy popular these days, perhaps because there are currently no regulations defining what constitutes a product as being "all natural." Therefore, you will find countless food, drink, beauty and cosmetic companies making fantastic claims about their "all-natural" products, many of which contain artificial additives, colorants, and preservatives.  Does this necessarily mean they are inferior products? Absolutely not. However, at River City Soapworks, we will not participate in this kind of deceptive advertising.  The term "all-natural" should imply that the product contains only naturally-derived ingredients, nothing artificially or chemically-derived.

Whether you prefer your soap "all-natural" or you enjoy the fragrant, colorful soaps found in popular bath and body stores, we have something to delight everyone's senses. Our all-natural line of products are forumulated with pure plant-derived colorants and essential oils, whereas our fragrant soaps burst with a rainbow of colors and are formulated with skin-safe cosmetic colorants and fragrance oils. Whichever you prefer, you can trust River City Soapworks to share the ingredient list for all our products and to engage in responsible and honest advertising practices.

Q: What is a Bath Bomb?

A: A Bath Bomb (or Bath Fizzie) is a tightly packed ball of skin-loving goodness that you drop into your bath water, transforming your ordinary bath into the ultimate home spa experience!  When it hits the water, the Bath Bomb will bubble, fizz and spin, releasing an effervescent combination of moisturizing oils, butters, and fragrances into your bath.  Bath Bombs are available in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and colors and are made with premium, skin-loving ingredients.

Although rare, Bath Bombs may crack or break in transit.  While we make every effort to pack our Bath Bombs securely to prevent this from occurring, breakage does not affect the functionality of the Bath Bomb.  Refunds will not be issued for Bath Bombs that are broken or cracked in transit.
